Gun Shops and Gun Control

Cook County Board of Commissioners Meeting - June 8, 2016
     
Significant Decisions Made:

• The commissioners moved to support an intergovernmental agreement, that allows the Cook County Sheriffs department to assist the Lyons police department to conduct random inspections of gun shops in the Village. (Agenda Item 16-3355)
  
• Approved 2 resolutions urging the Illinois General Assembly to institute statewide licensing and regulation of gun dealers and ranges through SB1883 and HB3422. (Agenda Items 16-2302 and 16-3175)

Significant Topic Discussed in Committee:
Asset Management Committee had a presentation on county employees pension fund. In 2001, the pension fund was fully funded, but due to new benefits being added on, and the capping of the amount allowed to be contributed, the fund is becoming unsustainable. 

Public Comment and Item to Watch for in the Future:
The Responsible Business Act (Agenda Item 16-3668)

• Would require businesses to pay a living wage.
• Proposal drew a large crowd and support from several public speakers.
• Comm. Steele, the sponsor, stated he is still working on the ordinance so it has "teeth" in it to create a penalty for businesses that do not comply.
  

Other Observations:

• There were multiple consent items, and comments and speakers regarding the death of Muhammad Ali, which pushed the board meeting into the afternoon without completing the committee meetings. 
  
• At 1:45pm President Preckwinkle called for a 30minute break after which 3 committees would resume, followed by the full board meeting.
