Health  System


  1.  The Cook County Health System is governed by a twelve-member semi-independent board that serves four-year terms, and its directors are approved by the Cook County Commissioners who also approve its annual budget.  Effective January 2020, the Cook County Board and President began providing more oversight for financial and some HR matters including approval of the top executive management positions.
  2. The Affordable Care Act is key to increasing the revenues of CCH primarily through its county-wide managed care insurance program called “County Care”.
  3.   Stroger Hospital is renowned for its trauma center which also trains EM residents from across the United States.
  4. CCH provides services to more than 500,000 patients every year including its “County Care” clients.
  5.  The Health System’s budget for 2023 is just over $4 billion including support from Cook County taxes of more than $228 million for the Correction and Public Health Departments and some pension and capital debt.  Its FTEs are budgeted at over 7,600.
